Santa Clara Wild Life Refuge

The Island Santa Clara is an insular ecosystem, particularly of the tropical desert atmospheres, which constitutes a critical habitat for the protection of the marine birds.

This place is located in the Province of El Oro, it was created on June 3, 1999 under the agreement No. 83.

The dominant vegetal species in the island is the muyuyo (lutea Cordia), a small tree in which nests the pelicans and the frigates.

The Santa Clara Island is the greatest zone of refuge of marine birds in Ecuador, the main ones are: blue legs piqueros, 4000 real pelicans and frigates.
